EKO HOT BLOG reports that Chinese President Xi Jinping has declared that his country will focus on preparing for war’ citing the ‘increasingly unstable and uncertain’ security of the country.
Jinping stressed that Beijing will ‘comprehensively strengthen its military training and preparation for any war’, as per state media CCTV.
Notably, the Chinese president’s recent announcement is seen as somewhat of a threat to Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own. China has repeatedly threatened to annex Taiwan by force if deemed necessary.
Xi Jinping’s latest declaration also comes in the backdrop of British Trade Minister Greg Hands’ visit to the island nation for UK-Taiwan trade talks.
‘The visit is a clear signal of the UK’s commitment to boosting UK-Taiwan trade ties. Like the UK, Taiwan is a champion of free and fair trade underpinned by a rules-based global trading system,’ the Department for International Trade said in a statement as per AFP.
China expressed a strong objection to the British Minister’s visit to the island nation. “China firmly rejects any form of official exchanges with the Taiwan region by any countries having diplomatic ties with China,” said spokesman Zhao Lijian at a daily press conference.
Zhao further said that ‘Beijing urged Britain to stop any form of official exchanges with Taiwan and stop sending wrong signals to Taiwan separatist forces’.
Notably, last month, China added a line to its constitution on ‘resolutely opposing and deterring’ Taiwan’s independence and ‘resolutely implementing the policy of ‘one country, two systems’.
Taiwan has seen a string of visits by foreign officials in recent months, the most high-profile of which was US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
