Who Was Christian Chukwu? 10 Things to Remember About the Super Eagles Great

- AFCON Glory: Captained Nigeria to its first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980 and helped the team finish as runners-up in 1976 and 1978.
- Coaching Career: Served as Super Eagles head coach (2002–2005), winning bronze at the 2004 AFCON, and was also assistant coach when the Golden Eaglets won the 1985 FIFA U16 World Cup.
- Club & Legacy: Led Enugu Rangers to continental glory in 1977, coached both club and national teams, and was honored with a biography in 2023 titled “The Field Marshal.”
Christian Chukwu, a former Super Eagles captain and coach, has passed away. He died early on Saturday, April 12, at the age of 74.
His friend and former teammate, Dr. Olusegun Odegbami, confirmed the news.

Odegbami, who won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations with Chukwu, said: “I just heard the sad news this morning between 9:00 and 10:00. My close friend and teammate, Christian Chukwu, MFR, has died. Emmanuel Okala told me a few minutes ago. May he rest in peace, and may God comfort his family.”

Played for National Grammar School Nike and Highlanders FC.
Was captain of the Nigerian team that won the country’s first Africa Cup of Nations in 1980.
Also played in the 1976 and 1978 AFCON finals, finishing second.
Led Enugu Rangers FC to win the Africa Cup Winners Cup in 1977.
Coached the Super Eagles from 2002 to 2005 and won a bronze medal at the 2004 AFCON in Tunisia.
Was assistant coach for Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets, who won the FIFA U16 World Cup in China in 1985.
Became coach of Kenya’s national team in 1998.
Coached Enugu Rangers to 6th place in the 2008/2009 Nigerian league season.

In 2023, his biography titled “The Field Marshal: Chairman Christian Chukwu” was launched in Lagos.
He was married and had four children — two boys and two girls.
