Christmas: Northern Christians Fear Terror Amid Bomb Attacks

Barely days to Christmas and New Year, Christians in northern Nigeria express fear over potential terror attacks, dampening festive plans.

Recent violent incidents, including bomb explosions in Niger, Zamfara, and Borno states, have heightened security concerns, with communities appealing for government intervention.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that on December 6, 2024, explosions in Zamfara’s Dansadau district killed several people, while Niger State recently suffered landmine detonations that claimed three lives, including a child. Similarly, a July bombing in Borno’s Kawuri village left 19 dead and 20 injured, suspected to be the work of Boko Haram.

Residents in Plateau State recall last year’s Christmas Eve attack in Bokkos, which left 150 dead. Many remain anxious, urging authorities to prioritize safety this season.

Zamfara Christians fear retaliation from bandits, following the arrest of a gang leader’s associate, prompting the deployment of 550 security personnel by the NSCDC. In Kaduna, churches plan subdued celebrations, while Southern Kaduna communities face heightened banditry risks. Despite fears, some residents in Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, and Nasarawa express optimism for peaceful festivities.

In Borno, economic hardship compounds insecurity concerns. Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across Kaduna, Plateau, and Borno prioritize survival over celebration. At the Maiduguri IDP camp, displaced residents lament dire conditions and uncertainty about returning home.
