The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has apprehended four minors accused of stealing iron rods and building materials from an uncompleted construction site in the Guzape area of Abuja.
The suspects, identified as Matthew Vincent (15), Timothy Shedrack (15), Moses Vincent (11), and Lucky Enock, were caught following a complaint lodged by concerned residents who noticed unusual activity at the construction site. Witnesses reported loud noises and observed the suspects dismantling materials during nighttime hours.
According to preliminary investigations, the minors allegedly scaled the fence of the uncompleted building and used crude tools to remove iron rods, which they later sold to a local scrap dealer known as “Babanbola.” Authorities suspect that Babanbola is part of a broader network involved in the theft and illegal sale of construction materials. Efforts are underway to apprehend him and dismantle the operation.
The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, PSC, emphasized the need for parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s activities, particularly during late hours. He called for proactive measures to guide minors away from criminal behavior and urged community members to report suspicious activities to the authorities promptly.
Additionally, construction site owners were advised to deploy security personnel and install surveillance systems to deter theft. The police also urged scrap dealers and business owners to verify the sources of materials before purchase.
The arrested minors will be transferred to juvenile homes for rehabilitation. Those found culpable may face legal consequences in accordance with the law.
This incident highlights the pressing need for collaborative efforts to curb juvenile delinquency and enhance community safety. The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order while fostering vigilance among residents.
