The suspect, dressed in black and armed with a rifle, tried to enter through the back door, where around 60 children were waiting to take their first holy communion.
Parishioners confronted the suspect, took him outside, and called the police.
However, a recording of the livestream showed Father Nicholas DuPré stopping the service and asking churchgoers to join him in prayer as people panicked and screamed.
Police officers arrived, swept the church, and placed the suspect in custody.
He was later charged with terrorizing the church and possession of a firearm by a juvenile.
Abbeville Police Chief Mike Hardy praised the quick-thinking bravery of the church congregation, saying, “We are incredibly grateful to both parishioners and police officers for acting quickly to ensure the safety of all.”
Furthermore, the church continued with the communion event and plans to have uniformed law enforcement officers outside its masses from now on “out of an abundance of caution.”
