The Rivers State Police Command has cautioned women against collecting transport money from men and failing to show up for agreed meetings, warning that such actions now constitute a criminal offence.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the warning followed viral online reports highlighting the growing trend, prompting the police to issue an official clarification.
Police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), explained that the act amounts to obtaining money under false pretence, which falls under fraud-related offences in Nigerian law.
“It is an offence, a punishable offence,” Iringe-Koko stated. “Why will you collect money from a man without going to see him? It is obtaining money under false pretence — 419.”
She added that anyone found guilty could face arrest and prosecution if victims file formal complaints, stressing that reports will be investigated thoroughly to ensure offenders are held accountable.
The police also urged members of the public to avoid deceitful financial dealings, warning that failure to fulfil obligations after receiving money could lead to legal consequences.
