EKOHOTBLOG reports that commuters were stranded in Ondo State as scores of vehicles were submerged by a heavy downpour which wreaked havoc on communities in Akokoland.

It was gathered that the heavy rainfall started at 3pm and did not stop until about 8.30pm on Thursday.

A source disclosed that many vehicles, particularly trailers were all stranded, while the flood caused a river in the area to overflow its banks and make incursions to the surroundings.

The source added that the flood wreaked much havoc on a bridge at the Agbaluku area of Ikare, saying, “Water covered the bridge, making it impassable for even motorcycles and vehicles.”

It was further gathered that many travellers decided to pass the night until the water was subsided in the early hours of Friday.

Speaking on the incident, the Director of Environmental Services in Akoko North-West Local Government, Mrs Yemisi Adeniyi, warned the residents to desist from building houses close to the riverbank just as she urged those blocking waterways with refuse to stop the act or face the wrath of the law.

On his part, a community leader in Ikare Akoko, Chief James Oladetohun, appealed to the contractor handling Ikare dualisation road to speed up the project, adding that the community should be declared an ecologically prone town to be catered for by the Federal Government.
