EKO HOT BLOG reports that grammy-nominated afrobeat artiste, Seun Kuti, has criticized former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, for writing a letter pleading for mercy on behalf of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who was found guilty of organ trafficking in the United Kingdom.
Seun Kuti accused the former Head of State of not showing the same level of concern for young Nigerians who are currently incarcerated for non-violent crimes.
According to a report by DAILY POST, Obasanjo had written a letter to The Chief Clerk of the Central Criminal Court in London, requesting that the UK court temper justice with mercy in the case of Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, who were convicted of organ trafficking.
The letter, which was dated April 3, has sparked outrage among some Nigerians who feel that Obasanjo should be using his influence to help young people who are currently in prison for non-violent crimes.
Seun Kuti, the son of legendary afrobeat musician Fela Kuti, expressed his frustration with Obasanjo during an Instagram live session on Thursday. He accused the former president of showing more concern for Ekweremadu than for the many young Nigerians who are currently languishing in prison.
Kuti said: “Obasanjo did not write [a] letter on behalf of the many young Nigerians in prison, even for non-violent crimes but he wrote a letter for Ike Ekweremadu who wanted to harvest another person’s organ, destroy another person’s life for his daughter.”
Ekweremadu and his wife were found guilty of organ trafficking by a UK court in March 2022. The couple had been accused of trying to bribe a German hospital to harvest organs from a German citizen for their daughter’s medical treatment.
The judge in the case described the couple’s actions as “heinous” and “despicable.” They were both sentenced to ten years in prison.
