EKO HOT BLOG reports that in Abuja, residents report similar price surges, with the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder hitting ₦17,000 in various areas, reflecting the national trend.

Key Factors Driving the Price Surge

  1. Global Crude Oil Prices
LPG prices are closely linked to the international crude oil market. Fluctuations in crude oil prices directly impact the cost of LPG imports, with Nigeria relying heavily on imported gas.
  2. Exchange Rate Volatility
The depreciation of the Nigerian Naira against major foreign currencies has significantly raised the cost of LPG imports. This instability has led to higher retail prices across the country.
  3. Seasonal Demand
Festive seasons and holidays typically see increased demand for gas, especially in urban areas where LPG is the primary fuel for cooking. This heightened demand often leads to price spikes.

Current LPG Prices per Kilogram

The retail cost of gas varies based on the quantity purchased. Below are the average prices as of January 2025:

  • 1kg Cooking Gas: ₦1,400
  • 3kg Cooking Gas: ₦4,200
  • 5kg Cooking Gas: ₦7,000
  • 6kg Cooking Gas: ₦8,400
  • 10kg Cooking Gas: ₦14,000
  • 12.5kg Cooking Gas: ₦17,500

The persistent rise in LPG prices underscores the challenges faced by Nigerian households. With global and local factors influencing costs, stakeholders are calling for measures to stabilize prices and reduce the financial burden on citizens.
