Coronavirus: Panic In The Land As Nigerians Can No Longer Hold Their Fears

The Coronavirus also known as Covid-19 is an ongoing global pandemic  that was first reported in Wuhan, Hubei, China, in December 2019.

So far, over 130,000 cases have been confirmed in more than 120 countries and territories, with major outbreaks in mainland China, Italy, South Korea, and Iran.

More than 4,900 people have died from the disease and 68,000 have recovered.

As it would be expected, Nigerians have been panic-stricken since the deadly Coronavirus found its way into the country on February 29 through an Italian visitor.

Recently, a second case was confirmed, and it has spiked another level of fear in the minds of many.

Ekohotblog sought to know some of these fears Nigerians have been containing since the inception of the disease.

We Are Faced With Doom ~Kingsley Ugochukwu

As we all know, travel prohibitions have been placed across a wide range of counties.

My fear now is that this virus has made our economy crash.

The countries we trade bilaterally with, no longer export their goods.

Even our crude oil no longer sells, the Naira has depreciated.

We are faced with recession and economic doom.

How about health wise?

I can recall when, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, World Health Organization, Director General said his fears remains that the virus shouldn’t come to Africa as it might not be contained, because there are so many underdeveloped countries and Nigeria is one of them.

And now that the virus has arrived Nigeria?

How well is the government tackling it?

There is poor surveillance, bad contact tracing,  invalid record system, etc.

Truly, things are going beserk.

We hope they come up with a vaccine in a short time“.

It Might Affect Our Genetics Adversely ~Emmanuel Maduka

“Firstly, the disease might go out of control in Nigeria.

It might modify our genetics adversely by  mutating and taking on some more dangerous gene thereby becoming deadlier.

The world’s economy might go haywire as economic activities is now at a slow pace

And personally, I fear it will disrupt  awesome European football competitions”

Public Enlightenment Is Key ~ Feyishayo Ajayi

“I am scared of the fact that lots of people aren’t  taking basic precautions and I don’t blame them either.

For example,  this morning on my way to school, as usual commutters were struggling for a commercial vehicle and there’s no way you won’t be so close to another person. Although I had sanitizer in my bag,  I was very careful.

But even with that how many people would want to maintain proper hygiene?

It’s  just so scary….but we have to keep hoping.

We need public enlightenment especially at the grassroot level where we have majority who are oblivious of some of these happenings”.

My Fear Is Not To Be A Victim ~Benhotons Sophia

“I do not have any fears because the same alarm and chaos came when the Ebola virus incepted and to be honest, it was worse.

But after sometime, it died down

And my fear, if at all there is definitely not to be a victim.

A health expert said the black race will scale through this because of our weather condition and blood type”.

Children, Elderly People Are More Prone To The Disease ~Health Personnel

Being in the health line makes me understand that there are even more diseases deadlier than the novel Coronavirus and it’s due to low immunity that’s why it spreads so much in other countries.

I implore the government to be cautious in dealing with the children and the elderly because they are the ones with the lowest immunity and they can easily contract it,  that is  just my fear.

And  because its symptoms are almost like common cold, it may not easily be figured out by people“.

I Fear The Stigma That Comes With The Disease ~ Otobong Mapz

“Once a person test positive for this virus, you’re being quarantined.

Meaning, you will be isolated.

You become stigmatized because people will avoid you like a plague.

Who wants to die?

So you’re virtually on your own, pending when the miraculous cure comes because as at now, no treatment has been discovered for the disease”.

This Is The End Of Human Race, But God Is Over Everything ~Imonisa Ogaga

“My fear is that if the virus is not well taken care of or attended to it will lead to the end of human race because it spreads with the air.

I think this virus was invented by the Asians in order to reduce their population.

But obviously,  it is getting out of hand and good hygiene must be frequently maintained by washing hands with alcohol based sanitizers and using face masks.

But inspite of all our human efforts, at the end of the day, we can only bank on God’s Mercy and Grace.

While we adopt the necessary measures, let’s watch, pray and believe that God will wipe this pandemic from the world”.
