Correctional Training School At 48; Past Commandant’s Award, Magazine Launch, and Need For Synergy

In 1915, the Nigerian Correctional Service Training School Kaduna was built as Warders Barracks the same year with Kaduna Convict Prisons now Kaduna Custodial Center. It continued as barracks until the present one behind the Custodial Center was built.

Ten years down the line, the old barracks which is now the correctional Training School was converted to a training depot for training Native Authority Prison Warders in the former Northern Nigeria. However, this continued until 1968 when it was again turned into barracks for Federal Prisons Warders.

It’s important to note that by 1973, the facility was finally converted to a full-blown institution saddled with the responsibility of training Federal Prison Warders that make up the Inspectorate Cadre of the Service, hence the name Prison Training School Kaduna.

Most importantly, the present reforms in the service occasioned by the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019 have changed the name of the Service from Nigeria Prison Service, NPS to the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS.

In view of the foregoing, the Prison Training School Kaduna also witnessed a transformational change of Nomencleture to Correctional Service Training School Kaduna, CSTSK.

However, available records have it that, since its inception, the school has trained thousands of students ranging from native authorities who converted to Warders, and recruits who were directly employed as well as those on refresher Courses among others.

It was reliably gathered that the reformatory institution had since its many years of establishment produced 36 Commandants with 35 males and 1 Female, who have served selflessly and meritoriously toward ensuring the school continues to deliver on its mandate of training and re-training of staff for effective service delivery.

The Present Commandant of the Correctional Service Training School Kaduna CC. Mohammed Isah who spoke with journalists during the occasion pointed out that the training school is anchored squarely on Discipline, Professionalism, and Dignity of the Human Being.

It is also a known fact that the school is designed toward Building the knowledge and capacity of the Correctional Officers and men with relevant skills needed to meet the 21st Century Security demand in line with international standards and best practices.

The Past Commandants of the Correctional Service Training School, numbering up to 35 were given awards of recognition, excellence and Service to Humanity to enable them reflect on their past records and legacies which are still fresh in the minds of many and have not been washed away in the sand of time.

The Forty-Eight years anniversary event of the Correctional Service Training School also coincided with the Graduation Ceremony and Passing Out Parade of the Second Batch, Nigeria Correctional Service, Basic Recruit Course-233 which made it historically eventful as it featured the unveiling of the school’s queen, news broadcast, traditional display of superlative dance, awards of deserving graduands on academics, leadership and discipline as well as unveiling the past Commandants of the School.

Similarly, there was an official launching of 2nd Edition of the School’s publication with the theme ‘Keepers Guide’ magazine which features a number of interesting and enlightening issue-based articles and interviews about the School, the Service and lots more.

Furthermore, in line with the numerous transformations going on in the Service, including the new Correctional Service Act 2019, Commentators and Social analysts have argued that it is just a mere change of Nomenclature and lack the necessary measures to address the challenges bedevilling the service, as well as penal administration in the country.

However, authorities in the country including those in the service have posited that the new law is in line with global penal administration and has clear-cut and well-designed objectives capable of tackling the numerous challenges in the Administration of the country’s Criminal Justice system.

It is however recommended that the leadership of the service must collaborate with various relevant stakeholders such as the immigration, fire service and civil defence among others within the interior ministry to FastTrack the implementation, hence the new law is all about community services that require the involvement of everyone toward prevention and reduction in crime.

The Synergy according to experts will however help to strengthen the fight against insecurity, as different strategies, tactics and intelligence would be deployed alongside more personnel who are employed particularly to face the scourge head-on.

There’s no doubt that the development began with the former CGC. Ahmed Ja’afaru, but with the appointment of the new Controller General of Corrections CG. Haliru Nababa, it’s however hoped that he will leave no stone unturned via collaboration with stakeholders such as the traditional and religious leaders, civil society groups and non-governmental Organizations among others toward ensuring a swift and effective implementation of the new law.
