The speaker of Lagos state house of assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, was on Monday exonerated of corruption allegations levelled against him.
Saharareporters had accused Obasa of financial impropriety bordering on siphoning of public funds and abusing his office.
Saharareporters accusations are outcome of a trenchant and thorough investigations carried out by the online media platform.
the speaker was allegedly to own more than 60 bank accounts.
He was also accused of using his office to misappropriate funds and allocate contracts to himself through third party sources and his cronies.
Consequently, the assembly set up a panel to probe and authenticate the veracity of the allegations levelled against the speaker, the panel was chaired by Victor Akande, representative of Ojo constituency I,
Appearing before the panel on Saturday, Obasa described the allegations as frivolous and untrue.
He told the nine-man fact-finding panel that there was no way he could have done some of the things he was accused of doing, adding that the record of his financial dealings were in the public domain
Akande presented the report of the fact-finding adhoc committee to the house at the plenary session on Monday.
While presenting his report on the floor of the house on Monday, Akande said all the allegations made against Obasa were “frivolous.”
Akande said the speaker followed due process in all his dealings.
He recommended that Azeez Sanni, clerk of the house, investigate how documents which led to the allegations against the speaker leaked.
“We also recommend that the activities of the house should be digitalised for proper record keeping and monitoring,” Akande said.
“It was then suggested by the committee that a vote of confidence should be passed in the speaker of the house.
“The speaker did not have multiple accounts with Ecobank, the BVN ascribed to Wema Bank does not belong to him and the companies attributed to him in Wema Bank is not correct.”
The recommendations of the committee which cleared Obasa was put to a voice vote by Sanai Agunbiade, majority leader, and they were unanimously adopted by the lawmakers.
Obasa was cleared a day after the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) faulted the probe.
It said the assembly could not take up the responsibility of the economic and financial crimes commission (EFCC) which is the body saddle with investigating sharp and corrupt practices by individuals.
It noted that its petition to the anti-graft agency still subsists.
HEDA said there was no way justice could be prevail because the speaker was being probe by his friends and loyalists.
The group described the probe as a smokescreen.
