As expected, the 2020/2021 Premier League season was ushered in with much excitement and anticipation. Customarily, the big boys went shopping and made some impressive squad augmentations. The nether regions of the Premier League were not also shut out of the marketplace, as some of the Premier League’s new boys exercised a bit of financial muscle by closing big money deals of their own.
Without a doubt, everyone had eyes on last season’s runaway winners, Liverpool; who, by some stretch of the imagination had sealed the league just halfway into the season. The Kop have been in fine form under Jurgen Klopp and were widely tipped to replicate last season’s heroics.
There was also no counting out Manchester City, as the blue half of Manchester has seen its stock grow exponentially since the sensational take over of Middle Eastern big money spenders. Pep Guardiola’s men towards the twilight of the last decade have produced sensational football, set new standards and raised the bar for the rest of the pack in the Premier League.
While many pundits may have wagered towards another two-horse race, caution dictated that the new season may not in fact be business as usual, especially in view of the flurry of business which was going down in West London. After being hamstrung with a transfer ban which largely blighted the Blues’ ability to compete at the highest level last term, Chelsea decided to go all out into the market, landing some of the biggest prospects in European football. They too, could potentially be major contenders.

But then, 12 matches into the new season as the picture isn’t shaping out as painted. Despite be jointing top of the Premier League, Jurgen Klopp’s men have not exactly dazzled in the manner of the previous two seasons. Manchester City and Chelsea, despite showing glimpses of their characteristic quality have failed to piece together any sort of decent streak. Surprisingly, it is Jose Mourinho’s men who stand tall after 12 games, despite the return of Gareth Bale being the only mentionable business done by the North London side in the summer.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men, Everton, had made an early claim to the title, with the duo of James Rodriguez and Dominic Calvert-Lewin producing spectacular performances early on, but a series of poor outings sent the toffees on a downward spiral which altered the face of the Premier League standings.
But then, not even Spurs who currently lead the pack have established themselves as genuine title contenders. Mourinho’s men have also been found culpable of dropping points in a number of winnable games.
Just to place the unpredictability of this Premier League into context, Manchester United, who have seemingly faltered on the domestic front this season have suddenly found themselves 5 points behind Spurs and Liverpool, with an outstanding game in hand. Only last week, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer had made bold claims that it isn’t beyond the realm of possibility for his team to win the Premier League this season.
Yesterday, December 15th, 2020 didn’t seem to provide a different narrative this season from what we’ve seen. Chelsea, having begun to find a bit of rhythm fell to the sword at Molineux, while Manchester City had to share the spoils at the Hawthorns. So, with the heavyweights finding it difficult to establish a firm grip on the battlements, Eko Hot Blog reckons that there may very well not be a better time to plunge into the race to win the English Premier League.
