EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Court of Appeal, Kano State Division, has scheduled a crucial hearing for Monday, November 6, to hear the appeal lodged by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, contesting the annulment of his election by the Kano Election Petition Tribunal.
This case, of significant political consequence, revolves around the rightful winner of the Kano Governorship Election, with Governor Yusuf and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) as the applicants, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, as the defendants. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) also plays a pivotal role in this lawsuit.

The Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal invalidated Governor Yusuf’s victory on September 20, citing 165,663 votes as invalid due to unsigned or unstamped ballot papers by INEC. Initially declared the winner with 1,019,602 votes, the tribunal’s ruling reduced Yusuf’s votes to 853,939, a significant shortfall of over 30,000 votes compared to Gawuna’s 890,705 votes.

The tribunal’s decision subsequently declared Nasiru Gawuna, the APC candidate, as the victor of the governorship election, ordering INEC to revoke Yusuf’s certificate of return and issue a new one to Gawuna.
In response to this critical development, Governor Yusuf and the NNPP, along with INEC, have chosen to appeal the tribunal’s judgment, leading to a potential political showdown that could reshape the Kano State political landscape.
