Court Rejects Nnamdi Kanu’s N1bn Lawsuit Against FG

Eko Hot Blog reports that a federal high court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed by Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), against the federal government and the Department of State Services (DSS).

In the judgment delivered on Monday, Judge James Omotosho ruled that Kanu failed to provide credible evidence to support his allegations of fundamental rights violations by the defendants.

Kanu claimed that DSS operatives denied him access to his lawyers and eavesdropped on his conversations with them. However, Omotosho stated these claims could not be substantiated.

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1633/2023, was filed on December 4, 2023. Kanu named the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the attorney-general of the federation (AGF), DSS, and its director-general as the 1st to 4th respondents, respectively.

Kanu sought declarations that his rights were violated when DSS operatives allegedly seized and photocopied confidential legal documents brought to him by his lawyers and when they allegedly eavesdropped on his consultations with his counsel.

He also requested an injunction to prevent such acts and sought N1 billion in damages.

The DSS denied all allegations, stating that Kanu has access to his family and legal team on visiting days and that consultations occur without interference.

The FRN and the AGF also urged the court to dismiss the suit as an abuse of court process.

Ultimately, the court found in favour of the DSS and the federal government, dismissing Kanu’s claims.
