Court Sets Date for Speed Darlington’s ₦300m Legal Battle Against Police IGP

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the ₦300 million fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by singer Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington, against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the case is now scheduled for hearing on January 27.

The adjournment was prompted by a request from CSP Audu Garba, counsel for the IGP, who sought more time to review a further affidavit filed by Speed Darlington’s lawyer, Abubakar Marshal.

During Monday’s proceedings, Marshal informed the court that the session was meant to address the substantive application for the enforcement of his client’s rights. He noted that the police had submitted their counter-affidavit on Friday, necessitating a further affidavit in response.

Garba confirmed receiving the counter-affidavit but stated he had yet to review the further affidavit, which Marshal admitted was filed earlier that morning. Justice Musa Liman allowed Marshal to serve the document in court but granted Garba’s request for additional time, leading to the adjournment.

The ₦300 million lawsuit centers on allegations of unlawful detention, which Darlington claims violated his fundamental rights. The case follows a December 23, 2024, court order instructing the police to either charge or release him within 48 hours.

While the court previously directed his immediate release, Darlington alleges he was subjected to inhumane treatment during his detention.

Speed Darlington’s legal troubles began with his October 2024 arrest in Lagos over allegations of defamation and cyberstalking related to comments about Burna Boy. The singer was granted bail but was later detained again, leading to the current legal action.

The suit seeks damages for alleged unlawful detention, an order for immediate release, and protection against further rights violations.
