Court To Decide Nnamdi Kanu’s Bail Fate In Fresh Twist, As Kanu’s Health Condition Speaks for Itself

Eko hot blog reports that Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has set March 19 as the date to rule on whether to grant bail to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu, who has been in custody of the Department of State Service (DSS) since 2021, faces allegations of treasonable felony.

The court’s decision follows arguments from both the defense and the federal government regarding Kanu’s bail application. Kanu’s lawyer, Mr. Alloy Ejimako, emphasized his client’s serious heart condition and urged the court to grant bail to ensure he receives proper medical attention. Ejimako highlighted the government-owned hospital’s confirmation of Kanu’s health challenges and expressed concern over his continued detention, which he claimed endangered his life.

However, the federal government, represented by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, opposed the bail application. Awomolo argued that Kanu must prove there was no adequate medical facility to address his health needs at the DSS. He also pointed out the absence of evidence indicating Kanu wouldn’t abscond if granted bail again.

The court will not only rule on the bail application but will also proceed with trial on March 20, as confirmed by Justice Nyako. Kanu’s legal team remains optimistic about securing bail for their client, citing past court judgments and emphasizing the urgency of addressing Kanu’s health condition.
