A high court in Maitama, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has denied former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele’s request to travel to the United Kingdom for a medical checkup.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the presiding judge, Hamza Muazu, in a ruling on Tuesday, stated that Emefiele did not provide sufficient evidence to demonstrate that the medical trip was essential and unavoidable.
The judge noted that although Emefiele claimed to have received an invitation for medical attention in the UK, he did not present a copy of this invitation to the court.

Judge Muazu also pointed out that Emefiele is facing criminal charges in three other courts and failed to prove that his medical condition could not be treated within Nigeria.
Emefiele is currently facing multiple counts of alleged fraud and abuse of office.
In an affidavit filed before the court, Abdulakeem Labi-Lawal, Emefiele’s counsel, requested the release of the former CBN governor’s passport to facilitate his travel to the UK for medical treatment. However, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) opposed the application, arguing that Emefiele might be tempted to flee the country if granted permission to travel.
