COVID-19 In Nigeria: Some States May Face Another Total Lockdown Next Month

As the number of COVID-19 cases rises again in Nigeria, it has sparked concerns about whether another lockdown is imminent.

Recall months ago the Federal Government had declared total lockdown and interstate ban on citizens in order to ease the spread of COVID-19. However, Nigerians clamored for ease of lockdown, so as to meet their daily needs, the government heard the cry of its citizens and eased the lockdown but still put a ban on interstate movements with exceptions.

President Muhammadu Buhari who is the commander in chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces made a broadcast on the democracy day approving the ease of lockdown.

Before then, Buhari in conjunction with the federal government has vested powers on the state governments to decide when to lift lockdown in their various states. For instance, restrictions on churches and mosques have been lifted by the federal government yet some states like Lagos didn’t agree to the decision of the federal government due to the persistence increase in the number of affected persons in their state.

Looking at the persistence increase in the number of affected COVID-19 persons, there are possibilities for the second total lockdown in Nigeria from next month July 2020.

Ekohotblog reports that on Thursday Midnight the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, announced 594 new cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria, bringing the country’s total to 22,614.

Lagos state is the state with the highest number of confirmed cases with 159 on Thursday night, bringing the State’s total to 9,482.

The Federal Capital Territory is next on the list with a total of 1,656, while Kano State as at Thursday night remained at 1,191 cases, while Oyo’s has a total of 1,188. The state with the single number of cases of COVID-19 is Kogi.

With the above increase in the interstate number of COVID-19 infections, it is clear some states may go for another total lockdown from next month July 2020.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha who spoke at the COVID-19 daily briefing on Thursday in Abuja said the PTF had done its best in educating Nigerians.

Boss Mustapha said PTF found that non-compliance had been largely fueled by skepticism and ignorance about the virus.
