Louisiana congressman-elect, Luke Letlow has died from complications related to COVID-19, multiple sources confirmed Tuesday evening.
His death happened at a hospital in Shreveport on Tuesday, according to state officials.
A statement by his spokesman, Andrew Bautsch, said: “The family appreciates the numerous prayers and support over the past days but asks for privacy during this difficult and unexpected time.”
A statement from the family along with funeral arrangements will be announced at a later time.
The 41-year-old Republican broke the news on Dec. 18 that he had been in the intensive unit due to his COVID-19 status, which was positive.

He was initially taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, where he sounded an optimistic note on Dec. 21, over being certain about his recovery. Two days later, he was placed in an intensive care unit at Shreveport hospital, where remdesivir and steroids were used for his treatment.
The Chancellor of LSU Health Shreveport indicated that Letlow suffered a cardiac event before his death.
Letlow, defeated Republican state Rep. Lance Harris to win the seat representing northeast and central Louisiana. The victory allowed the former chief of staff to the exiting Republican U.S Rep. Ralph Abraham to take over his boss’s House seat. Letlow was survived by a wife, Julia and two children.
The incoming congressman, who was due to resume office in January had an uneven record of wearing masks while campaigning. He once urged the state to ease lockdown restrictions, citing its effect on the economy.
