As part of efforts to cushion the effects of the lockdown occasioned by the Coronavirus global pandemic, Oko Irese, an ancient town in Surulere Local Government area of Oyo State began distribution of palliative in form of food packages to her residents.
Barely twelve days after the inauguration of a 25 member Committee on Oko Irese Covid-19 Relief, the Committee with overwhelming support in cash donations from Oko indigenes home and abroad, on Tuesday flagged off the first phase of the Covid-19 Relief Distribution.
Earlier, the Oranmiyan of Okoland, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Solomon Olagoke Adisa Akinola Oyeyode III while inaugurating the Committee charged them to think on ways to curtail the spread of the ravaging virus, create and source for financial and relief materials to support the people of Oko Irese Community during the lockdown.
Flagging off the first phase of the distribution, the Committee under the leadership of Hon.
Prince Moses A. Olaniyan noted that the Committee had embarked on the sensitization of the people of the community to imbibe personal hygiene by the washing of hands, use sanitized, observe social distancing, and wearing of nose masks. He also mentioned that the first phase will cover the distribution of “food items to over 600 indigent Oko community as palliatives.”
In an official release, the Oranmiyan of Okoland appreciated the good and generous gesture of donors home and abroad and the Committee.
Further, he urged other sons and daughters of Oko Irese to contribute their own quota. “No amount of money is small. Let us assist the less privileged here today, “ he mentioned.
In his own remarks, Hon. Olusegun Odebunmi (Bunvic), the Chairman, House of Representative Committee on National Orientation who equally is an indigene, urged members of the community to abide by the NCDC guidelines on Covid-19 while warning that Coronavirus is real.
“I will not forget to remind that Coronavirus is real and you can protect yourself and help prevent spreading the virus to others”.
Oko Irese is a border town in Oyo State sharing boundary with Ejigbo in the State of Osun.
You will recall that 27 persons out of the Ivory Coast Returnees were tested positive to Coronavirus. A situation that heightened tension in Ejigbo and the neighboring communities.
