The ‘Sanwo-Olu Listens’ Initiative by Lagos state government has begun to yield positive and lasting impacts on residents of the state.

The initiative is part of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration effort to mitigation the devastating effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on residents of the state.

The programme which is being overseen by office of Civic Engagement, was designed to solve a diverse number of challenges ranging from chronic ailments, varying degrees of disasters occasioned by unforeseen situations, to loss of jobs and businesses as a result of the pandemic.

The second edition of the event took place at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium with Fifty beneficiaries benefitting from the remarkable initiative.

Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Civic Engagement, Princess Aderemi Adebowale stated that based on the impact of the financial assistance on the socio-economic life of the first beneficiaries, Governor Sanwo-Olu has graciously approved the extension of the gesture to another set of Fifty vulnerable beneficiaries.

Adebowale explained that the Office of Civic Engagement had continued to screen and shortlisted walk-in applications received from various platforms in the public domain with beneficiaries emerging according to the degree and nature of their various financial challenges without any bias.

According to her, the process of selecting the beneficiaries for the financial support was through a committee within the Office set-up to interview and screen applicants to facilitate selection.

She added that the monitoring team from the Office of Civic Engagement went round the beneficiaries to ensure that the money given to them by the Governor was used for the purpose it was meant for.

One of the beneficiaries of the Governor’s support was Oluyinka Ogundaisi from the entertainment industry.

Seated on a wheel chair, Ogundaisi narrated how he suddenly had a collapsed spine, which according to him required Five hundred thousand naira monthly to be attended to after undergoing a surgery.

Giving his closing remark, Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that apart form providing security of lives and properties, Government has responsibility to address the prevalent poverty among the people.

He noted that the beneficiaries need not thank him for the gestures, adding that it was about giving hope to the hopeless and giving life to the people who are challenged.
