COVID-19: People Don’t Believe Coronavirus Is Real — Borno Deputy Gov
Deputy governor of Borno state, Umar Kadafur, has described as unfortunate the attitude of residents of the state to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kadafur, in a statement, said the state COVID-19 committee was working round the clock to forestall the spread of the disease.

Kadafur, who is also the chairman of the state response team for the prevention and control of COVID-19, said some people in the state were not taking the existential threat the pandemic posed seriously because they still didn’t believe that COVID-19 was real.
He likened the people’s behaviour to COVID-19 pandemic to what happened in the early nascent days of Boko Haram insurgents, adding that people were doubting the existence of the group not until they infiltrated the country.

He bemoaned the widespread disregard for preventive measures such as social distancing, saying despite spread of the disease people are still engaging in activities that involved mass cluster gathering like burial ceremony and congregational prayers.
“When Boko Haram started, a lot of people felt it was something not to be taken seriously, until when it consumed everybody. This COVID-19 is another Boko Haram coming, and yet people don’t believe it’s real,” a statement quoted Kadafur to have said.
“I keep saying it’s real. As a response team, we’ll continue telling the general public and reaching out with advocacy.”
He implored the public to be cautious of the threat posed by the disease.
A total of 75 people, including 16 health workers have contracted the disease in the state. The state has also recorded 11 deaths.
