Importers Association of Nigeria (IMAN) accuses Nigeria Customs Service of continuing to collect import duties on food items despite President Bola Tinubu’s executive order to suspend such duties.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Importers Association of Nigeria (IMAN) has raised concerns over the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) continuing to collect import duties on food items, despite President Bola Tinubu’s executive order suspending such duties and tariffs.
Aminu Dan-Iya, the Chairman of IMAN in the north, expressed frustration in a statement on Monday, stating that there has been no change following Tinubu’s directive.
“Customs officials tell our members at entry points that they don’t have any written communication about the suspension,” Dan-Iya said. “Therefore, nothing has changed; we’re paying duties as usual.”
He emphasized that IMAN is perplexed by the lack of implementation of this crucial presidential order, which was officially announced some time ago.
“People are outraged, asking why food prices and other commodities keep rising despite the removal of taxes. The truth is that something is fundamentally wrong because we cannot fathom why such a crucial presidential order is yet to be implemented,” Dan-Iya added.
In July, President Tinubu announced the suspension of import duties on essential food items as a strategy to combat the hunger crisis in the country.
Customs Comptroller General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, in a video posted on social media platform X shortly after Tinubu’s announcement, stated that the Nigerian Customs would implement the executive order.
He said, “Global inflation is impacting nations worldwide, including Nigeria. To address this, the federal government through the Nigeria Customs Service is suspending import duties and taxes on essential food items to make them more affordable.
“We’re committed to implementing this measure seamlessly to address the problem of hunger in our nation. We have streamlined export processes to ensure Nigerian goods reach international markets efficiently.”
