This was disclosed by the Comptroller General of the NCS, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, to reporters in Lagos.

Adeniyi stated the sale process has been perfected requiring applicants to submit a form with details including their National Identification Number (NIN) to generate a barcode for collecting the commodity. Ten registration points were opened to ease the purchase process.

“In ensuring food security for Nigerians. We are here to shed light on the commitment of the NCS in protecting our society by ensuring the availability of essential food items,” Adeniyi said.

He added the aim is to crash food prices and shore up the Naira’s value, warning against reselling the purchased rice. Adeniyi explained the disposal is temporary and targeting very poor Nigerians.

The Customs boss disclosed they have secured government approval to sell the seized food items to needy Nigerians at discounted prices. Eligible groups include artisans, teachers, nurses, religious bodies and others with a verifiable NIN.

Comprehensive security measures were outlined, with officers closely monitoring the supply chain. Strict eligibility criteria were established to prevent misuse.

“It is imperative that beneficiaries of this exercise understand that the items are not to be resold. We take a strong stance against any form of profiteering or exploitation of this initiative,” Adeniyi stated.
