President Bola Tinubu has advised Nigerians to switch off their lights to help reduce electricity bills amidst rising energy costs. Following his inauguration in May 2023, the cost of living soared due to the removal of the petrol subsidy and an increase in electricity tariffs.
Petrol prices skyrocketed from under ₦200 per litre to over ₦1,100 in some regions.

On April 3, 2024, the electricity regulator raised tariffs for Band A customers, increasing rates from ₦66 to ₦225 per kilowatt-hour. This move has drawn significant criticism due to the immediate impact it has on citizens already grappling with economic hardship.
Speaking to reporters at his Lagos residence on Monday, Tinubu encouraged Nigerians to better manage their resources, saying, “It’s not negative to learn to manage. You learn to control your electricity bill, switch off the light, let’s learn to manage.”
Prominent south-south leader, Chief Edwin Clark, has called on President Tinubu to avoid tribalism and nepotism in his appointments. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Clark accused Tinubu of appointing cronies and allies without considering their competence.
As the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Clark stressed that Nigeria belongs to all its citizens, urging the president to embrace inclusivity in his leadership approach. He emphasized that the nation’s issues will persist unless the leadership treats every Nigerian equally.
