Dabiri-Erewa Mourns As Police Find Nigerian Doctor, Wife Dead In US Home

Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has mourned a Nigerian medical doctor based in Houston, United States, Dr Ben Okigbo, and his wife, Theresa, who was a nurse.

According to Sugar Land Police Department (SLPD), Texas, Okigbo and his wife, Theresa, were found dead in their Sugar Land, Texas home.

In a statement issued by Head, Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, NIMASA, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, on Sunday, the commission described the news of their death as “most shocking and depressing.”

“The news of the death of Dr Ben Okigbo, a medical doctor in Houston and his wife, Theresa who was a nurse, is most shocking and depressing,” the statement said.

“Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) condoles with the family, particularly the children, who are now orphans, as well as members of the Nigerian diaspora community in the US.

“Dr. Ben Okigbo and his wife, Theresa, were found dead in their Sugar Land, Texas home on Friday morning, according to police.

“NIDCOM commiserates with the Okigbo family and pray unto God to give them the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss.

“NIDCOM will continue to monitor police investigations into the unfortunate incident.”

The SLPD said the incident is currently being investigated as “murder-suicide.”

“The SLPD has confirmed two deaths and the investigation is focusing on the possibility of a murder-suicide,” it said.

In an updateupdate on its Facebook page on Saturday, the police said their preliminary findings showed Benjamin strangled his wife to death.

The department noted that the two sons survived the attack with “non-life threatening injuries”.

“Update: The homeowners in this case have been identified as husband and wife Benjamin Okigbo and Theresa Okigbo. This case is being investigated as a murder-suicide,” it wrote.

“The investigation has revealed that Benjamin Okigbo strangled Theresa Okigbo to death, attempted to kill both of his 21 year old male son’s by strangling them and then killed himself by hanging.

“Both adult son’s survived the attack with non-life threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.”
