How times flies, it’s eleven years since rap icon, Dagrin breathed his last hurrah!
Oladapo Olaitan Olaonipekun Aka Dagrin died on the 22nd of April, 2010 from the injuries he sustained when he crashed his car on a stationary truck in Mushin on the 14th of April, 2010.
He died at the peak of his music career the at age of 25. The rap artiste ran the street and came with a new version of hardcore rap fused with English, Yoruba and Pidgin.
The beat to his songs and his lyrics tell stories that the street can relate with, and with bars, the street can finally call its own.
Dagrin won the hearts of the elites as well as the urchins as he perfectly weaved his lyrics for general entertainment.
He started his music in 1994 with freestyle kind of rap, he is one of the Afro hip hop revolutionaries in Nigeria.
While the Remedies, Plantashaun boys were running the mainstream, he won over the streets with the underground style of rap heavily fused with street slangs.

He announced his entrance into the mainstream with his sophomore studio album called CEO, (Chief Executive Omoita) which translates into Chief Executive Thug.
The Album contains evergreen songs like a Pon Pon Pon, Kondo, Ghetto Dreamz, etc. His tracks ruled the airwaves and still enjoys massive airplay with lots of nostalgia of his short-lived exploits in the music industry.
He walked away with many awards for these efforts and lots of endorsements and many big shows came his way.
The acceptance of his style of music paved the way for lots of “local” rappers and demystified the jealously guarded rap music by the few rap heads in the industry back then.
Lots of rappers started finding their voice and one such is Olamide as Dagrin had created a waiting audience whose appetite had been whetted by his innovative style of music.
Olamide’s first single ” Eni Duro” enjoyed massive success because of the existing and booming market for rap music in local dialects as Dagrin made it okay to rap in the Yoruba language.
He died when he was on top of his game ten days after his accident.
But his legacies will forever live on.
