EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a recent appearance on the Bootleg Kev audiovisual podcast, Afro beats sensation David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, caused a stir by omitting veteran producer and singer Don Jazzy from his list of contemporary Nigerian music legends.
The talented artist, however, acknowledged Don Jazzy’s former partner at Mo’hit Records, D’banj, as one of the revered figures in the Nigerian music industry.
During the podcast, Davido was asked about the pioneers of modern Nigerian music, and he promptly mentioned D’banj as one of the artists who had a significant impact on him during his formative years.
Alongside D’banj, he also recognized the contributions of 2Face, an iconic Nigerian musician, and the dynamic twin duo known as P-Square, referring to them collectively as the “big 3” or “OGs” (original gangsters) who paved the way for the genre.
“Definitely D’banj. He was one of the artists I saw while growing up. D’banj, 2Face…So, the big 3 then were D’banj, 2Face, and there was a group of twins called P-Square. Those were our OGs. They were the people that made this thing possible.” Davido was quoted saying.
The exclusion of Don Jazzy, who is widely regarded as a legend in Nigerian music circles, raised eyebrows among fans and industry observers.
Don Jazzy, renowned for his production prowess and role as a music executive, has played a pivotal role in shaping the Nigerian music landscape over the years.
However, it appears that Davido’s personal perspective led him to mention D’banj while unintentionally leaving out Don Jazzy.
The episode sparked conversations among fans, with opinions divided over Davido’s choice and the significance of Don Jazzy’s omission.
The Nigerian music industry is rich with talented individuals who have made indelible marks on the global stage, and the debate surrounding their contributions continues to fuel discussions within the vibrant music community.
As the news of Davido’s remarks spreads, fans and industry insiders eagerly await any further comments or clarifications from the artist himself, Don Jazzy, or other key figures in the Nigerian music scene.
