DC Officer Shot While Recovering Firearm from Storm Drain
D.C. police officer Wayne David tragically passed away on Wednesday evening after suffering an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound while attempting to recover a firearm from a storm drain.
According to police reports, the incident occurred when officers responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle.
A man, upon seeing the officers, jumped out of the car, ran onto the I-295 highway, and hid a gun inside a storm drain before fleeing the scene on the back of a motorcycle, ABC News has learned.
As Officer David, a 25-year veteran of the force, attempted to retrieve the weapon, it accidentally discharged, striking him in the upper torso.

Executive Assistant Chief of D.C. Police, Jeffery Carroll, noted that David, a crime scene search officer, was “highly trained in recovering evidence and firearms” and had successfully recovered “hundreds of guns” throughout his career.
D.C. Chief of Police, Pamela A. Smith, expressed the department’s deep sorrow in a statement: “Our hearts are heavy tonight after the tragic loss of one of our own. Investigator Wayne David, a veteran MPD officer, lost his life while serving in the line of duty. The entire MPD, along with Officer David’s family, is feeling an indescribable pain right now.”
“Investigator David was the epitome of a great officer, dedicated and highly respected by all. This is a tremendous loss for us,” Smith continued.
“For more than 25 years, Investigator David devoted himself to protecting and safeguarding the District of Columbia, serving with passion and honour. His service will never be forgotten.”
The search for the suspect who abandoned the gun is ongoing. Police released an image of the individual and stated there was no evidence suggesting the man was connected to the motorcyclist who had aided in his escape.
