  • At least 15 people killed and 10 injured in a crush at New Delhi Railway Station.
  • Thousands had gathered at the station, many traveling for the Kumbh Mela festival.
  • Authorities say overcrowding caused a brief but deadly surge in the crowd.

A deadly crush at New Delhi Railway Station has claimed the lives of at least 15 people and left 10 others injured, according to officials.

Dr. Ritu Saxena, deputy medical superintendent of Lok Nayak Hospital in New Delhi, confirmed the casualty figures to BBC Hindi following reports that thousands of people had crowded into the station on Saturday evening.

Reuters reported that among the deceased were three children and 10 women.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences in a post on X, saying his thoughts were “with all those who have lost their loved ones.”

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes, with massive crowds attempting to board trains heading to and from the Kumbh Mela, a major Hindu religious festival.

Ruby Devi, a traveller, recounted how the crowd outside the station was so large that she was unable to enter. Another witness said the police tried to control the situation, but the sheer number of people overwhelmed security efforts.

Inside the station, delays contributed to the overcrowding. Two trains were held up, while a third, bound for Prayagraj—where the Kumbh Mela is taking place—was waiting to depart.

“There were far more people than I have ever seen at this station,” Dharmendra Singh, a passenger trying to travel to Prayagraj, told India’s PTI news agency. “I saw six or seven women being carried away on stretchers right in front of me.”

KPS Malhotra, deputy commissioner of police, said the situation spiraled “out of control for a brief spell of 10 to 15 minutes due to overcrowding.”

Indian Railways initially dismissed reports of a stampede as “rumours,” according to Reuters, but later confirmed that an unspecified number of injured individuals had been taken to hospitals.

The tragedy comes just weeks after a deadly pre-dawn crush at the Kumbh Mela festival in northern India, where tens of millions of Hindu pilgrims gathered to take a holy dip in sacred river waters.
