Democracy Day: A Celebration Of A Step Forward And Five Steps Backwards In Nigeria
The Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba and Nigerian social activist Gani Adams, has expressed his concern over challenges that has greeted the nation since June 12, 1993, which is now marked as Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
Gani described progress recorded in Nigeria’s democracy since the annulment of June 12 election as “a step forward and five steps backwards”.
According to Adams, Nigeria will continue to battle for freedom and will never get it right until the restructuring is considered.

The Yoruba leader’s submission was contained in a ‘democracy day’ message made available on Friday through his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi. He described the 1993 annulled polls as the most defining moment in the history of Nigeria.
According to him, despite struggles made by the then leaders, democracy is still yet to take its roots in Nigeria. Adding that the nations’ democracy is only evolving but not what was fought for during June 12 struggle.
Adams in his message noted that the country can again be revived if only federating states are allowed to develop at their own pace. He said; “When the federating units are allowed to develop at their own pace, there will be mutual benefits and progress in Nigeria.”
“The federating states will be geared towards achieving the best for the people at the grassroots. This will be possible when there is healthy competitions among the federating units.”
He added that the issue of security and state police in the country would easily be addressed without fear or favour when federalism is implemented.
“It is good that our democracy is evolving, but sadly it is not yet Uhuru because this is not the kind of democracy we fought for during the June 12 struggle,” said Adams.
“The journey for Nigeria’s democracy has been a tortuous one but today, our democracy is, at best, one step forward and five steps backwards. But in all, we thank God that we are still alive to tell the story,” he reiterated.
