Democracy Day: NGO Tasks Philanthropists On Economic Empowerment Of Nigerians

An Abuja-based NGO, Society for Eradication of Poverty in Nigeria (SEPIN) on Friday urged well-meaning Nigerians to assist the masses in the country.

Mrs Constance Nwosu, National Coordinator of the society made the appeal in an interview with the Newsmen in Abuja in commemoration of June 12 Democracy Day.

Nwosu who described democracy as the best form of government, urged philanthropists and well-meaning Nigerians to use the occasion to advance the economic empowerment of Nigerians.

She explained that wealth distribution which was the essence of democracy must be emphasised in practical terms aimed at guaranteeing sustainable development.

“The ongoing lockdown has caused more hardship not just in Nigeria but globally. Therefore, we call on all to join hands to rescue the country from the doldrums of hardship.

“We must also exceptionally thank some Nigerians like Sen. Rochas Okorocha for their commitment to the welfare of the downtrodden,” she said.

Nwosu who saluted the selflessness of the Okorocha, urged other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate him.

According to her, Okorocha has empowered over one million Nigerians across the 36 states of the federation even before the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

She reiterated her society’s determination to continue to work in synergy with corporate organisations and philanthropists in addressing the plight of the common Nigerians.

Nwosu also expressed confidence in the capability of President Muhammadu Buhari’s APC-led administration to engender political and economic stability in the country.

“Good governance and the war against corruption and poverty is not a sole responsibility of the president but requires collective responsibility of all Nigerians,” she said.

Nwosu, however, urged Nigerians to continue to support the country’s democracy which she said, was the only roadmap to eradicating poverty.
