President Tinubu Launches Nigeria Police Green Initiative
Eko Hot Blog reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerians to remain vigilant against forces that might attempt to disrupt the current democratic framework.
Acknowledging the economic challenges, he reaffirmed his commitment to supporting citizens through these trying times.
The President urged Nigerians to continuously dedicate themselves to achieving economic democracy, emphasizing its critical importance alongside political democracy.
He said, “I come before you to declare that our most important work lies ahead. The real test has never been whether we would rise to meet the misfortunes and pain of dictatorship.
“The true challenge is whether we will lower our guards as the shadow of despotism and its clear physical dangers fade.”
He further added, “As we celebrate the establishment of our political democracy, let us also commit ourselves to realizing economic democracy.”
Regarding the economy, the President acknowledged the economic difficulties but emphasized the necessity of ongoing reforms.
“Our economy has been in desperate need of reform for decades. It has been unbalanced due to an over-reliance on oil revenues,” he explained.
“The reforms we have initiated are intended to create a stronger, better foundation for future growth. While these reforms have caused hardship, they are necessary to fix the economy in the long run, ensuring everyone has access to economic opportunity and fair compensation for their efforts.”

He pledged to always listen to the people, stating, “As we continue to reform the economy, I shall always listen to the people and will never turn my back on you.”
The President also announced that his administration would soon submit an executive bill to the National Assembly to codify the agreements from the ongoing minimum wage negotiations between Organized Labour, the private sector, and state and Federal governments.
“This bill will enshrine the agreed terms into law for the next five years or less,” he noted.
“In the spirit of cooperation, we have negotiated in good faith with organized labour on a new national minimum wage. We shall soon send an executive bill to the National Assembly to formalize these agreements.
“In response to labour’s call for a national strike, we chose cooperation over conflict. No one was arrested or threatened. Instead, we invited labour leaders to negotiate toward a good-faith resolution.
“Reasoned discussion and principled compromise are the hallmarks of democracy. These themes will continue to guide my policies and interactions within our political economy.”
The president in his speech, also lauded the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola and other heroes of democracy, including General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua and Pa Alfred Rewane, and others.
He celebrated other heroes including Chief Anthony Enahoro, Chief Abraham Adesanya, Commodore Dan Suleiman, Chief Arthur Nwankwo, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, Chief Frank Kokori, and Chief Bola Ige, and others who made great sacrifices for the restoration of democracy.
