EKO HOT BLOG reports that Joseph Egbunike, the deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), is dead.
DIG Egbunike was born in Onitsha, Anambra State and was the most senior police officer in the country’s Southeast region until his death., reportedly collapsed and died in his Abuja office in the late hours of Tuesday.

Egbunike led the Special Investigation Panel (SIP) formed by Usman Baba, the Inspector General of Police, to investigate Abba Kyari, the suspended head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), over money laundering allegations involving fraudster Ramon Abbas, also known as Hushpuppi.
The panel was formed in response to Kyari’s indictment in a case involving Hushpuppi, who was involved in a $1.1 million scam against a Qatari businessman in the US District Court of California.
According to later reports, the Police Service Commission and the IGP disagreed on the punishment to be meted out to Kyari in connection with his indictment. While this was going on, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) declared the suspended cop and six other people wanted for alleged drug offenses. A few hours after the NDLEA declared Kyari and others wanted, the Nigerian Police Force turned them over to the anti-narcotics agency.
Egbunike has a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Accounting degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, as well as a Bachelor of Laws (LLB Hons. ), a Masters in International Law and Diplomacy (MILD), and a PhD in Criminology.
In Police Mortgage Bank Plc, the late DIG represented the Nigeria Police Force accounts and budget. In addition, he served on the board of The Nigeria Police Force Property Development and Construction Company Ltd.
He was said to have undergone major surgery a few weeks ago for an undisclosed ailment.
According to a source, Egbunike was obese, which he had been managing for years with a combination of measures.
