DIA to Detain Babangida, 19 Others for 30 Days Over Banditry, Kidnapping Charges

Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has authorised the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) to detain Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) A. A. Babangida and 19 others for 30 days.

This detention is related to their suspected involvement in banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism.

The court’s ruling allows DIA operatives to thoroughly investigate the suspects’ roles in these serious crimes.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that ASP Babangida, who has been in DIA custody since June, faces allegations of supporting terrorist groups, including Boko Haram and ISWAP, in various operations across the country.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

The detention order, issued on Wednesday in response to an ex-parte application (FHC/ABJ/CS/1146/2024) from DIA, initially requested a 90-day period due to the complexity of the investigation and recent developments involving bomb experts linked to the suspects.

However, Justice Lifu granted a 30-day detention, stressing the importance of conducting a prompt and lawful investigation.

He noted that the suspects have already been detained for three months and are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
