DISGRACE! Power Outage Disrupts Commonwealth Day Celebration In Abuja

The Commonwealth Day which is celebrated annually on the second Monday in March, was today hindered by a power outage at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja.

The programme which was themed: ”Delivering a common future: Connecting, innovating, transforming”, had top officials of diplomatic communities, heads of agencies of the Federal Ministry of Education to grace the event.

Unfortunately the delegates and  students from over 10 schools were kept in the dark for hours due to lack of electricity since 11am which the programme was slated to start.

Out of frustration, these Diplomats and permanent secretaries left the hall of the event to sit in the minister’s office.

As no solution could be proffered, the venue of the event was changed to the NCCE.

One dignitary spotted was the British High Commissioner, Richard Moon.

The Commonwealth, a voluntary association of independent sovereign states, most countries under the defunct British Empire, has 53 members with about 2.4 billion people.

The highlights of the celebration in Nigeria included parade of the Commonwealth flags, presentation of theme songs, poetry recitation, drama presentation, cultural dance and exhibition.

The ministry  organised youth lecture and quiz competition in which students were tested in English, Mathematics, Sciences, Current Affairs and issues around Commonwealth.

The coming together of the countries under the Commonwealth, contributed to the provision of high-quality education and training, through the sharing of resources and facilities.

The Commonwealth nations have been cooperating in the pursuit of their common goals and shared values in the area of education, trade, security, and governance.
