He made the announcement in a post on Truth Social Wednesday night.
“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” the former president said.
“J.D. honorably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association.
“J.D.’s book, ‘Hillbilly Elegy,’ became a Major Best Seller and Movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our Country. J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond.”
Vance—a 39-year-old veteran of the Iraq War, Yale-educated lawyer and former venture capitalist—was elected to the US Senate in 2022 after Trump endorsed him, which helped him beat Republican primary challenger Josh Mandel and Democratic nominee Tim Ryan.
The 2024 Republican nominee for vice president rose to prominence in 2016 when his memoir chronicling the social, economic and cultural effects of manufacturing’s decline in the Ohio town he grew up in, “Hillbilly Elegy,” was released.
Though Vance hasn’t always supported Trump, he has grown to be a defender of and campaigner for the former president and his ideas, including his views on trade policy and limiting foreign aid.
Vance said he didn’t vote for the former president in the 2016 election.
The potential next US vice president’s former roommate said he had texted him, saying Trump was “cynical” and could be “America’s Hitler”.
In October 2016, Vance tweeted Trump was “reprehensible,” saying the then-presidential candidate “makes people I care about afraid” and criticizing him for his anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim policies and rhetoric.
But Vance came around in 2021 and said he regretted his past comments about Trump, which secured him the former president’s endorsement.

When Trump endorsed Vance in his 2022 race, he acknowledged the candidate’s criticisms, saying: “Like some others, J.D. Vance may have said some not-so-great things about me in the past, but he gets it now, and I have seen that in spades.”
