Donald Trump Jr. is set to visit Greenland for a private one-day trip, just two weeks after President-elect Donald Trump reiterated his desire for the U.S. to take control of the autonomous Danish territory.
Reports indicate Trump Jr. will record video footage for a podcast during the visit.
In December, President-elect Trump reignited controversy by stating, “Ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity” for U.S. national security.

This follows his earlier, unsuccessful attempts to purchase the Arctic island during his first term as president.
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, responded firmly, stating, “We are not for sale and we will not be for sale. Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland.”
Trump confirmed his son’s visit on Truth Social, saying Trump Jr. and “various representatives” would travel to Greenland to explore its “magnificent areas and sights.”
The president-elect claimed Greenland would “benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our nation,” adding, “Make Greenland great again!”
Trump also shared a video featuring an unidentified Greenlander wearing a red MAGA hat, advocating for Greenland’s independence from Denmark and its alignment with the U.S. The man’s identity remains unclear.
Greenland lies along the shortest route from North America to Europe, making it a crucial strategic location. It is also home to a significant U.S. space facility.
While Trump Jr.’s trip is unofficial, it has drawn attention from both the Danish and Greenlandic governments.
The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted the visit but emphasized it is not an official delegation. Meanwhile, Denmark announced a substantial increase in defence spending for Greenland shortly after Trump’s remarks, which Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen called an “irony of fate.”
Denmark’s King Frederik X recently adjusted the royal coat of arms to highlight Greenland and the Faroe Islands more prominently, a move seen by some as a response to Trump’s comments.
In his New Year’s address, the king emphasized the unity of the Danish kingdom, stating, “We belong together.”

However, Greenland’s Prime Minister used his New Year’s address to push for independence, calling for freedom from “the shackles of colonialism.” This reflects a growing separatist sentiment within Greenland.
President-elect Trump’s interest in Greenland is not without historical precedent; U.S. President Andrew Johnson first suggested acquiring the island in the 1860s.
More recently, Trump has also signaled an interest in reasserting U.S. control over the Panama Canal, accusing Panama of imposing excessive fees. Panama’s president dismissed the claim, affirming the canal’s sovereignty.
