Tragedy struck in the Oregun area of Lagos State on Saturday as two factory workers died after falling into a diesel reservoir.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement released by its Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
“Following distress calls received on the 767 and 112 emergency toll-free lines at 10:37 a.m., LASEMA promptly activated its response team from the Command and Control Centre, Alausa, Ikeja,” the statement read.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene by 10:47 a.m. and discovered that two adult males had fallen into the diesel reservoir.
According to preliminary investigations, one of the men accidentally fell into the reservoir while working, and the second man fell in while attempting to rescue him.
First aid was administered immediately, and the victims were transported to the hospital by the Lagos State Ambulance Service.
However, despite extensive medical efforts, both workers were pronounced dead.
“Unfortunately, despite all sustained medical efforts, they later died,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed.
The LASEMA team has since been assessing the factory to determine the cause of the accident and to recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities have called for stricter adherence to safety regulations to safeguard the lives of workers.
Further investigations into the matter are ongoing.
