Dr Ganiyat Reunited with Family Ten Months After Abduction in Kaduna
Nigerian doctor Dr. Ganiyat Olawale-Popoola, who was abducted in Kaduna State ten months ago, has been safely reunited with her family. The handover ceremony, led by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, marks a significant success in the fight against banditry in Nigeria.
Dr. Olawale-Popoola, her husband Squadron Leader Nurudeen Popoola, and her nephew Abdulmugniy Folaranmi were kidnapped on December 27, 2023, from their residence at the National Eye Centre Quarters in Mando, Kaduna.
The reunion, attended by the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Bala Audu, representatives from Defence Headquarters, the Ministry of Health, and the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), underscored the government’s commitment to combatting abductions and securing the release of captives.
Dr. Audu expressed deep gratitude to security agencies for their dedication in securing Dr. Olawale-Popoola’s freedom and urged further efforts to rescue other Nigerians still held in captivity.
Minister of Education Dr. Moruf Tunji Alausa also praised the security forces for their skillful operation, noting that the release was achieved without a ransom payment.
He reassured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu is resolute in his commitment to eradicating banditry and commended both the NMA and NARD for their resilience and support throughout the ordeal.
