According to a source, the thieves took advantage of the closure of the runway for over three months to commit the crime.
The source also alleged that some FAAN workers connived with outsiders to steal the airport lighting equipment.
In response to the theft, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation, Dr Emmanuel Meribole, has ordered the suspension of some heads of relevant departments at FAAN.
Investigations are ongoing to unravel those responsible for the missing safety equipment.
A former Military Commandant at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, Group Capt. John Ojikutu, said that the theft was not new at the airport.
He recalled that he had to position soldiers on the runways in 1990 to stop the theft of runway lighting systems.
The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN, Mr Yakubu Funtua, said that the agency was doing everything it could to recover the stolen equipment and prevent a reoccurrence.
He said that FAAN would not tolerate any act of sabotage that could endanger the safety of air passengers.
The theft of the airfield lighting systems is a serious security breach that has the potential to put air passengers at risk.
