Drug Abuse: Epe Youth Council Sensitises Public Primary Schools, Cautions Against Substance Use

EKO HOT BLOG reports that against the backdrop of the rise in abuse of drugs and addiction among youths, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Epe branch, has taken its campaign against substance abuse to public primary schools in Epe division of Lagos State.

The youth council held a two-week-long school sensitisation programme tagged “Reading Habit: A Goal To Success”, with the sub-theme, “Get High Grades Not On Drugs,” in 14 Lagos State public primary schools in Epe Central with resource persons drawn from different walks of life in the community.

The Coordinator of the youth body, Comrade Ladele Ismail who spoke with EKO HOT BLOG during the school sensitisation program described the menace of drug abuse prevalent amongst the youths as capable of hampering infrastructural and human capital development.

He stressed that it was significant to organise the campaign which was held across some selected Lagos State institutions of Public Primary Education in the town.

“The menace of substance abuse, drugs and other related issues are clogging in the wheel of progress of any society because these issues hinder success in areas of both infrastructural and human capital development.

“We at the Youth Council in Epe, taking cognizance of the negative indicators around us, made it a point of duty to organise the sensitisation in our primary schools to educate and expose them to the expected dangers of indulging in such deviant behaviours.

“We are concerned about the primary school pupils because attention has been shifted from these children. Almost all sensitisation and awareness programs are held in the secondary schools in Epe and since we crave a secured future for our community, Lagos State and the Nation at large, we have to take action,” he stated.

Speaking further on the need to sensitise the pupils on developing good reading habits, Ladele said: “There are growing misconceptions about achieving success in the present society. Poor reading habits won’t lead them anywhere. The truth must be told to the pupils that if they want to become distinguished achievers, they must be good readers because the key factor behind most successful people is their exceptional reading habits.”
