EKO HOT BLOG reports that currently, 125 protesters remain in detention, including 38 remanded by Justice Emeka Nwite in Abuja. These detainees have been held for over 62 days. The 38 protesters are expected to appear before Justice Nwite soon for a bail hearing.
In an exclusive interview, Deji Adeyanju, counsel for the detained protesters, expressed concerns about the transparency of the judicial process.
He revealed that while authorities claim to have filed charges, his legal team has yet to receive any official documents. He noted that this lack of transparency highlights inconsistencies in how protest-related cases are handled across the country.
Adeyanju pointed out that in Kano, most of the 873 protesters arrested have been released, thanks to collaborative efforts with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
In the North-West, progress has been made in Sokoto, where two protesters were recently released.
Nationwide, more than 1,000 protesters were arrested during the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations. With releases in Kano, Sokoto, and Kaduna, about 125 protesters remain in custody, including the 38 in Abuja and others facing serious charges like treason.
Adeyanju emphasized the ongoing legal efforts to secure the release of the remaining detainees, particularly those held in Abuja. “We are still working on the cases of the 38 remanded protesters, but we haven’t received any formal charges yet,” he said.
The #EndBadGovernance protests were triggered by rising economic challenges, with some demonstrations turning violent, leading to numerous arrests and casualties.
