Popular Kaduna-based activist and political commentator Mahdi Shehu has reportedly been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations of spreading a misleading video deemed a threat to national security.
Counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama disclosed that Shehu was detained over the weekend after circulating a video alleging the establishment of a French military base in Nigeria’s northeast, which caused significant public concern.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that despite deleting the video, it had already gone viral, prompting the presidency to accuse Shehu of inciting anarchy in Northern Nigeria.
Special Adviser to the President on Social Media, Olusegun Dada, warned citizens about the dangers of fake news, accusing Shehu of using outdated footage to support his claims. Dada emphasized that such misinformation could destabilize the region.
Shehu, now in custody in Kaduna, faces potential legal action for disseminating false information. Authorities insist his rights are being respected during detention, with plans for his arraignment underway.
Makama highlighted Shehu’s controversial history, including a prior arrest for alleged extortion, as cited by former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami. While Shehu’s legal team insists the current arrest is politically motivated and linked to his criticism of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Malami’s firm maintains it stems from criminal accusations.
Shehu’s arrest has sparked discussions about the balance between free speech and national security in Nigeria.
