There were reports earlier on Monday that DSS operatives stormed the CBN headquarters to arrest Emefiele over allegations of terrorism financing.

However, the agency’s spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, debunked the reports in a statement Monday evening.

Afunanya described the reports as “fake” and “quite misleading.”

“The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to the false news making the round that its operatives invaded the Central Bank of Nigeria and arrested its Governor, today 16/1/23. This is fake news and quite misleading,” he said.

Emefiele, who left the country in December 2022, recently returned to Nigeria after his annual vacation abroad and resumed his duties on Monday.

Before his return, there were concerns over his whereabouts, especially after reports that the DSS approached a Federal High Court in Abuja seeking a warrant to detain him over alleged terrorism financing.

The chief judge, John Tsoho, who declined the secret police’s ex parte motion, said there was no concrete evidence to substantiate the claims against the CBN chief.

Afterward, a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Maitama issued an order restraining the DSS from arresting the Emefiele.
