Nigeria’s female basketball team, D’Tigress, have secured a place in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket after defeating Senegal 75-68 in a tightly contested semi-final on Saturday.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu congratulated the team for their resilience and praised the match as a “final before the final.” He commended their discipline, focus, and teamwork, noting that their performance has brought honour to the nation and earned global respect.
The President also lauded Coach Rena Wakama, the team’s first female head coach, for her leadership and tactical brilliance in steering D’Tigress to yet another milestone. “Her experience—both on the court and from the bench—continues to inspire this team to new heights,” Tinubu said.
By reaching the AfroBasket final, D’Tigress have also booked their place in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments, scheduled for March 2026. Tinubu assured the team of his administration’s full support as they chase their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and seventh overall.

Nigeria will face Mali in the championship game after Mali outclassed South Sudan 76-50 in the other semi-final. The final will be played in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, where D’Tigress aim to extend their dominance on the continent.
