Ebonyi PDP: Confusion As High Court Voids Primary Election After Supreme Court Ruling

A High Court has voided the primary election of the Ebonyi PDP chapter after a Supreme Court ruling.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that confusion seems to have set into the Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has voided the primary election of the party.

This online media platform gathered that in the fresh judgement of the High Court, the party has been directed to conduct a fresh primary election within 14 days of the judgement.

The presiding Judge, Justice Binta Nyako, allegedly nullified all the primary elections of the PDP conducted under Silas Onu.

The Ebonyi PDP held its first primary election on May 28th and 29th, 2022, under the headship of Silas Onu, and Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii emerged as the party’s gubernatorial candidate in the state.

While the second primary election, which was held on the 4th and 5th of June 2022 under the headship of Tochukwu Okorie, produced Obinna Ogba as its factional governorship candidate.

Following this development, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Amina Augie, unanimously affirmed the appeal filed by Ifeanyi on September 14, 2022.

The Supreme Court held that Chukwuma Ifeanyi is the authentic governorship candidate of the PDP in Ebonyi State for next year’s election.

The apex court nullified the 19 July decision of the Court of Appeal ordering a re-trial of the case between Ifeanyi and Joseph Ogba on the dispute over who was the validly nominated candidate of the PDP.

The Supreme Court restored the verdict of the Federal High Court in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State, by affirming Ifeanyi’s candidacy, saying the appeal court has no jurisdiction to hear the case lodged by Ogba.

However, Justice Nyako, in a fresh judgement, nullified the primary election and ordered for a fresh election to be held within 14 days.

The state chairman of the Ebonyi PDP, Tochukwu Okorie, has confirmed the nullification of the Party’s primaries.
