10 Students Injured, 5 on Life Support In Ebonyi Catholic School Gas Explosion
At least ten students from Good Shepherd Catholic Catering School in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, were rushed to the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital after a gas explosion rocked the school’s kitchen.
The incident, which occurred early Friday, left several students severely injured while they were carrying out their kitchen duties.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the explosion was allegedly triggered by an Android phone brought into the kitchen by one of the students. Comrade Emmanuel Nwizi, whose daughter was among the injured, confirmed the details of the incident.
Nwizi, an employee of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Abakaliki, revealed that five of the injured students are currently on life support in the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit.
He also shared that his daughter, Miss Chisom Nwizi, who sustained severe burns, had only joined the school in the past month.
Parents of the affected students have been in close contact with the school’s administration, working together to ensure that their children receive the best possible care.
Comrade Nwizi expressed gratitude for the efforts of the Catholic Reverend Sisters who run the institution, noting their commitment to saving the lives of the injured students.
Meanwhile, Mr. Joshua Ukandu, the Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi State Police Command, confirmed the incident but did not provide further details regarding the investigation.
Sources within the school also confirmed that the Reverend Sisters were deeply involved in managing the situation, providing comfort and support to both the students and their families. The tragic event has left the school community in shock as they pray for the full recovery of the victims.
