EcoSchoolsNg Project: FABE Int’l Foundation Holds Graduation Ceremony, Honors Outstanding Participants

Friday, March 19th witnessed the culmination of a series of collaborative efforts with FABE International Foundation as various Environmental Sustainability stakeholders graced the recently concluded Graduation Documentary Screening and Awards held at Nigerian Conservation Foundation Headquarters, Lekki, Lagos.

Notable guests include Mrs Belinda Aderonke, Perm. Sec, Lagos State Ministry of Environment, Mrs Folashade Fisayo, Lagos State Honourable Commissioner for Education ably represented by Mrs Somoye Olushola, Mrs Banire, Director, Environmental Education, Mrs Balikis Balogun, Head, Education Unit, Nigeria Conservation Foundation, Mr Ahmed Umar from Act Foundation, Dr Femi Adegoke, Co-Founder, Ecovirdis and representative of Recyclers Association of Nigeria, Mr Taiwo Adewole and Mrs Amarachi Remire, representatives of Recycle Points, Mr Lukman, Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance, Horlag Recycling representatives, Mrs Sowemimo, Ope Farms CEO and several notable School Principals.

As gathered by Eko Hot Blog, the event was organised to celebrate over 3000 students trained in environmental sustainability skills which include tree planting, upcycling, recycling, composting and gardening across Epe, Ikorodu and Badagry.

In her welcome address, Mrs Temitope Okunnu appreciated schools from Epe, Ikorodu, Badagry and other places for making it to the event. She described the project as an avenue for school children to learn environmental education practically.

“I’m excited to see everyone here today. I never thought it was going to be possible because of the COVID 19 pandemic and restrictions we have on congregating. Having been in existence since 2008, It has been our vision to have all our schools become Eco Friendly passionately and practically.

In 2020, we got the biggest surprise of our lives as an organisation, Act Foundation gave the first-ever grant at a time the COVID pandemic struck amidst the chaos and harsh consequences.”

Speaking further, she expressed excitement at the launching of the Environmental Bees Club by the Lagos State First Lady, Dr Ibironke Sanwo-Olu. She acknowledged the enormous roles played by the Ministry of Environment and Education respectively despite the COVID pandemic in 2020.

She noted that one of the Eco Coordinators, Mr Kaka Babatunde testified that the Ecoschoolsng project made the COVID 19 year very lively and educative for him. She also said that the COVID 19 year provided people with opportunities to learn new skills especially technology which unleashed their potentials.

While the certificate of completion was presented to students with outstanding performances during the project, the awards in various categories were also clinched by students, teachers, education officials, private individuals and volunteers across Education Districts 2, 3 and 5.

As usual, participating schools from Epe under Education District 3 had a good outing as Mr. Babatunde Kaka from Army Children Junior, Epe, clinched the Best Online Eco Coordinator under the Eco Coordinator New Media Category. Army Children was rewarded with a measuring scale after emerging as Second Best School for Recycling. Mrs. Arosa Adenike and Akintola Olu tosin won the Best Eco Coordinator and Best Eco Ambassador for Recycling Category respectively from Epe Girls’ Senior School, while Orekoya Segun from Odomola Senior School got the Eco Ambassador of the year award.

The event, which was plastics free saw the emergence of other awardees like Mrs Abimbola Williams of Immaculate Hearts Junior School. The same school also clinched the Best EcoschoolsNg of the year, Adesuwa Jewels from Ajara Secondary School won the Best Eco Ambassador of the year.
